چکیده

An algorithm is presented to fit precipitates in atom probe tomographic data sets as equivalent ellipsoids. Unlike previous techniques, which measure only the radius of gyration, these ellipsoids retain the moments of inertia and principle axes of the original precipitate, preserving crystallographic orientational information. The algorithm is applied to study interconnected γ-precipitates (L12) in the γ-matrix (FCC) of a Ni-Al-Cr alloy. The precipitates are found to coagulate along 〈110〉-type directions.

On the interplay between tungsten and tantalum atoms in Ni-based superalloys: An atom-probe tomographic and first-principles study

The partitioning behavior of W in a multicomponent Ni-based superalloy and in a ternary Ni–Al–W alloy is investigated using atom-probe tomography APT and first-principles calculations. APT observations indicate that whereas W partitions preferentially to the L12 -precipitates in the ternary alloy, its partitioning behavior is reversed in favor of the fcc -matrix in the multicomponent alloy. Fir...

FIRST PRINCIPLES COMPUTATIONS Effects of temperature and ferromagnetism on the c-Ni/c-Ni3Al interfacial free energy from first principles calculations

The temperature dependencies of the c(f.c.c.)Ni/c-Ni3Al(L12) interfacial free energy for the {100}, {110}, and {111} interfaces are calculated using firstprinciples calculations, including both coherency strain energy and phonon vibrational entropy. Calculations performed including ferromagnetic effects predict that the {100}-type interface has the smallest free energy at different elevated tem...

Direct observations of nucleation in a nondilute multicomponent alloy

The chemical pathways leading to L12 nucleation from nondilute Ni-5.2 Al-14.2 Cr at. %, fcc , at 873 K are followed with radial distribution functions and isoconcentration surface analyses of direct-space atom-probe tomographic images. Although Cr atoms initially are randomly distributed, a distribution of congruent Ni3Al short-range-order domains SRO , R 0.6 nm, results from Al diffusion durin...

Effects of tantalum on the temporal evolution of a model Ni–Al–Cr superalloy during phase decomposition

The effects of a 2.0 at.% addition of Ta to a model Ni–10.0Al–8.5Cr (at.%) superalloy aged at 1073 K are assessed using scanning electron microscopy and atom-probe tomography. The c0(L12)-precipitate morphology that develops as a result of c-(fcc)matrix phase decomposition is found to evolve from a bimodal distribution of spheroidal precipitates, to {001}-faceted cuboids and parallelepipeds ali...

The influence of tungsten on the chemical composition of a temporally evolving nanostructure of a model Ni-Al-Cr superalloy.

The influence of W on the temporal evolution of gamma' precipitation toward equilibrium in a model Ni-Al-Cr alloy is investigated by three-dimensional atom-probe (3DAP) microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We report on the alloys Ni-10 Al-8.5 Cr (at.%) and Ni-10 Al-8.5 Cr-2 W (at.%), which were aged isothermally in the gamma + gamma' two-phase field at 1073 K, for times rangin...
